Great River Brewery has been thriving in Downtown Davenport since 2009. Great River is a family-oriented small business that brews beer as well as soda.

Wendy has been on staff for 5 years now. She started working part time as a bartender, then slowly started picking up more shifts. After her commitment to the front of house, she transitioned into the back brewery. Wendy did brewery work including helping with the canning line and filtering, as well as cleaning tanks.

Two years into being employed at Great River Brewery, the owners wanted to hire someone to be a tap room manager, so she applied. Wendy said, “It was an easy transition back up front for me. I have a ‘Type A’ personality and I just want to be there for Great River in any way I can.”

Wendy had no idea that her original bartending job would lead her to the position she is in now. “It started off as just a stereotypical bartender position. I became fascinated with the brewery process and learning the full lifestyle of the brews,” Wendy said.

Wendy’s favorite menu item: 483 Pale Ale is her favorite on the beer board. Why is it called 483 Pale Ale? 483 is the Mississippi River mile marker just down the street near Lock and Dam No. 15.

Most important thing learned at Great River: “Time management is key. With the years that have gone by, they increased sales and have added staff. Managing 15 part-time people and personalities requires patience and highly-involved time management,” Wendy said.

Specials? Great River has a different take on happy hour and offers $2 off pints when the Arsenal Bridge is open to let barges through.
