People: Dan Bush (co-owner, operator, and 2x kickball champion)
Place: Armored Gardens (315 Pershing Ave, Davenport), a tavern offering delicious barbecue and 100 beers on tap.
As of writing, Armored Gardens is open Tuesday - Thursday from 11:00 am to 12:00 am, Friday - Saturday from 11:00 am to 2:00 am, Sunday from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm. It's closed on Monday.
Cal spoke with owner Dan Bush about Armored Gardens, an establishment which features delicious food, plenty of beer, and an enormous patio with games galore, including ping pong, beer pong, and a putting green. Satisfy your taste buds with hot barbecue and a cold brew in a unique setting. This is the third installment in a three-part blog series featuring the downtown Davenport businesses Dan's got a hand in.
[CH]: What was the genesis of the BBQ and 100-tap bar/restaurant?
[DB]: I felt like barbecue is underrepresented in the area, and when we looked around the QC the most taps I could find was 35 so we thought 100 would be a good, round number.
[CH]: Which beers on tap would your say are some of your best sellers?
[DB]: Front Street’s Cherry Bomb Blonde is our #1 seller and has been since we opened. I think we should just plumb a pipe from Armored Gardens to Front Street and tap it right from the source. Otherwise, we sell a lot of domestics, ciders, and IPAs.
[CH]: Your menu includes sandwiches, burritos, salads, ribs, and a few specialty dishes. Why do beer and BBQ go together so well?
[DB]: I think there is something very American about having a beer while eating ribs.
[CH]: You also have an enormous patio that features a putting green, giant chess set, and several ping pong tables. If you could challenge anyone to a ping pong match, who would you play and why?
[DB]: I’d love to play Elon Musk because I bet he would be a really sore loser.
Armored Gardens has the look of Caddyshack but the taste of a medieval banquet hall. Their barbecue is cooked slowly to achieve the perfect temperature and taste, and they have several vegetarian/vegan options. All the menu items can be paired with one of a hundred beers on tap. Taps of beers line the wall waiting to be pulled and enjoyed, with a variety of choices from pilsners, lagers, sours, stouts, IPAs, and many other unique choices, many of which come from local breweries.
Big thanks to Dan, and be sure to check out Armored Gardens on Facebook to see what new beers are on tap, check out their food menu, and sign up for their popular pin pong league.
